Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Central Eurasian Studies at Indiana University, Denis Sinor was born in Hungary on April 17, 1916 and educated in Hungary, Switzerland, and France. Between 1939 and 1948, he held various teaching and research assignments in France. During WWII he rendered modest services to the French Resistance; he joined the Free French Forces and was demobilized in November 1945.

Dr. Vardy received her doctoral degree from Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in Budapest and taught at Robert Morris from 1970 to 2001. 

Andrew (András) P. Fodor, PhD (1936-2021) of Stamford, Connecticut passed away on Thursday, November 18, 2021.

A distinguished scholar, a dedicated teacher, and our cherished colleague, Gabor Vermes graced Rutgers University for nearly thirty years. The Federated Department of History gratefully acknowledge and will remember with admiration his uncompromising devotion to the Department, his elegant concern for our students and his endearing contributions to our mission of academic excellence. To be sure, he set the very highest standards for a life well attended to in the academy.

Washington, DC – Members of the Hungarian American Coalition (Coalition) were deeply saddened to learn that Dr. Béla Bognár, Professor Emeritus of the Departments of Social Work and Medicine in Society at Wright State University and founder of the Coalition’s Bognár Family Hungarian Scholarship Fund passed away on September 24, 2019. He was 88 years old.

Ruth Ghering Biro, PhD (1940-2021), founding member of AHEA, passed away on December 12, 2021, of natural causes and complications from several surgeries.

István Deák, Seth Low Professor Emeritus of History, died at his home in Paso Robles, California, on January 9, 2023. He is survived by his wife Gloria, an art historian, and his daughter Eva.
